The Seattle Times: In Seattle, it's gonna rain - some more

As we approach a record consecutive number of rainy days, I wanted to remind everyone that this is, after all, Seattle. We really are just trying to maintain the myth that it rains about 300 days out of the year... Those few weeks that you hear about from visitors - those are all the same three weeks for all the visitors... ;)

Here's the Seattle Times story on the current forecast, and as you might have guessed, it calls for more rain.

More pictures up!

I've put up more pictures, although they aren't very well organized yet. Over the next few weeks, I'll be setting up (with Wendy's help) a better organized page with the trip in order, and only the best pictures (or at least those with a value to the story) included.

In the meantime, here are links to each of the current galleries of photos:

Torino (Turin)

Maranello (Galleria Ferrari)

Firenze (Florence)

Roma (Rome)

OK - still a little lagged...

Well, despite the extra sleep overnight, and the timing of our arrival, i find myself to be a little bit jet lagged today.

At about 3 PM, I started to have a little trouble staying awake. It took me a little while to realise why this would be so. Then I checked what time it was in Italy, and realized that 3 PM here is Midnight over there. So according to my internal clock, it's way past (or very close) my bedtime already. This has (mostly) faded and I'm able to focus without falling out of my chair. I'm looking forward to getting home, and trying to decide whether to take a nap, or head out to the museum to see the Tiffany display before it's gone...

Hanging out at London Heathrow

Well, we made the first leg home without incident. The taxi ride to the airport from the hotel was interedsting... Our cab was a Mercedes station wagon , and the driver was really enjoying the lack of traffic that early in the morning. We made it in only a few minutes, with the driver hitting speeds near 170 KM/H (about 110 MPH.) We encountered another mercedes along the way, who pulled into the flow, but we went around them on the outside of a fairly sharp corner, and as soon as we were clear our driver moved to the inside line. It's really quite fascinating the difference in driving styles between the Italians and Americans. I'd hate to be in an average US driver's car when they visited Italy. They just wouldn't stand a chance.

Now we wait for a bit (oh, say 5 hours) until our next flight (the long haul home), wand I plan on picking up a special bottle of spirits to hide in my closet for special occaisions... a 21 year old portwood scotch. Should be quite tasty, don't you think?

Looking forward to being home, and getting some rest from this vacation...

Cheerio!

The end is near...

Tonight is our last night in Italy, for tomorrow we fly home. It's been a great time, and although many of the sites we wanted to see were not open due to the holidays and all, I feel like we've gotten a fair taste, and it leaves me wanting more. Although we have promised to make Germany our next vacation outside of the US, another trip to Italy is definitely in the cards. There's much more to see here, in Rome, Florence and even Turin again, as well as the rest of the country, as we did not have time for Venice or the Cinque Terre. (I'm almost sure I spelled that wrong, but oh well.)

After this is completed, we plan to go have a nice dinner, and then go back to the hotel to pack our bags and get some rest before we have to cath the 5:15 am shuttle to the airport. Tonight, I'll either have a final dish of Pasta, and some stew, or possibly pizza one more time. Wendy is putting up some photos over at Wendy's World from out tour of the Vatican City (Museum and the Bassilica of Saint Peter). I'll be setting them up as more slideshows, and will put up links to those after I get somewhere that I can get connected and use my FTP software. :)

Until then, Ciao!

Wow, what a day!

Today was nice. After the walk home last night my knee was really hurting me (I did some damage yeas ago that occaisionally causes me grief.) However, today it was much better, and I was able to easily walk the streets of Rome and enjoy the sites. It rained lightly on and off, but not very much. Wendy and I found a small, ancient park where the entry was an eroded, old ruined wall of something from hundreds (thousands?) of years ago. We found some orange trees still with fruit, so I picked one for later, although I don't think it's quit ripe yet.

We walked down to the old part of town where there are many ruins that have been preserved, and also where the coloseum stands. Unfortunately, none of the places that we had thought were going to be open were available. We walked up a street that many others were taking, and at the top of the hill it was a dead end at a small convent. It was a nice day spent in old Rome, and although we couldn't go into the coloseum, or see the other stuff up close that we had wanted to, it was a very nice time. Now, at 5pm Rome time, it has started to pour rain, and there was even a clap of thunder not long ago. I wasn't expecting this, so I think I'm going to be getting pretty wet on my way back to the hotel (I'm in an internet cafe a couple of blocks away, as I was going to try to upload some more photos in bulk... still trying to get the Ferrari and Florence picture galleries up...)

So with that, here's a few more shots from the last couple of days until I get the galleries online.

The Trevi Fountain in the evening:

Another of the main squares with a great fountain (evening, of course. Our first night.)

One of my favorite shots of the coloseum from today.

Wendy with a gato near the colloseum. :)

That's all for now, looks like the rain has dropped off a bit, so I'm going to make a break for the hotel. FTP isn't being friendly, so the rest of the pictures will have to wait just a little longer.

Ciao!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2006! We celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary last night, along with the New Year, so this time of year is always extra special for us. We had dinner with our German friends, Karin und Werner, at a ristorante near the Spanish Steps. We then walked up Via del Corso to the Piazza del Popola (I'm certain that I spelled it wrong, but Wendy has it all in her blog at http://www.pensandpixels.com/wendysworld), and then up to th etop of the hill behind it for a view of the city. Everywhere all over the city people were setting off fireworks, and by midnite, the entire city was enshrouded in a fog of smoke. it was beautiful to see the dome of the Vatican from the top of the hill.

Here is a picture of a tree near to the ill that I found quite interesting as the smoke blew across the city.

I know, it's quite dark, I'll be plaing with it later to make it a little more visible...

I have to say, the architecture here is just incredible, and being around places that have been populated for so many thousands of years where the buildings are still evident is truly amazing. It brings a whole new awareness of time into focus.

Today we will be visiting the colleseum, and the ruins that are nearby before we meet with our friends again for a snack at Giolittis (famous Roman stop for coffee and gilotti...)

More later, but here is a parting shot with a bit of visible fireworks.

Ciao!
